These are the result of skin repair following injury, which can be related to accidents, disease or surgery. If the skin is more damaged, it will take long time to heal and the higher will be the risk of scar. Initially it appears red and thick, and then smoothly fades. Scars that seem repulsive at three months may fill nicely by six months or one year. But one thing is most important that once the scar grown from full thickness damage to the skin, it cannot be clear away completely. A good care makes it almost invisible or very thin & less visible, so that it can fade with surrounding skin crease of face.
Various types of scars have various types of locations and causes. Each scar has to be individually treated at the time of treatment.


It is the result of abnormal filling of the skin as a result of ACNE. This is the most common problem presents to our in young population. The scars often cause the patient to be self-conscious and may impact on their self-confidence. They may affect small or large areas of the face. The treatment depends on various factors and is highly individualized. ACNE scar treatment will reduces the visible scars, and also reduction in the depth of the scars and a greater equality of color of the affected area. A 50% improvement in ACNE scars is considered to be a good result.

Keloid Scars

All raised scars are not keloid scars. The features are-

  • It has been present more than one year.
  • It is stiff.
  • Mass is much bigger than the original scar.
  • It is tingling and irritating
Keloid scars are very difficult to treat, but not impossible.

Hypertrophic Scar (Raised SCAR)

Raised scars are the result of poor injury healing in the beginning. It may also be due to some internal factors like your skin type and familial tendency for formation of more scars after injury. Some people developed raised scars in all their wounds, these patients are referred to as keloid formers and clearly they have internal factors at play. Other people have these scars because the skin may have been excessively ill managed from the beginning, an infection during healing or when the wound edges may have been stitched by an inexperienced surgeon or in excessive tension.

Hypertrophic Raised Scars

These types of scars occur because of ill management from the beginning, due to excessive tension on stitches line. Generally it finds in dark color complexion person. It can be avoided by proper care of injury or burn from the beginning by an experienced plastic surgeon. This scar can be managed to a great extent to make it less visible.

Treatment Options for Scars


  • Surgery – Surgical process can repair the appearance of scars to a great extent, however, no scar can ever be completely clear away. This results in a less obvious mark. Each scar is different and has a different approach.
  • Silicone-containing products - These products like gels, creams and bandages are available on pharmacies. They are very helpful in reducing scar pain and consistency.
  • Steroid injections – With the help of fine needle, steroid is injected directly into the hypertrophic scar. Used with raised scars causing them to compress or crush.
  • Micro-dermabrasion /Full Dermabrasion – In this method an electrical machine is used to remove the top layers of the skin to give a more even and smooth shape to the surface of the skin. It produces improvement of certain scars like ACNE Scar or scars due to childhood chicken pox. However, it cannot be clear away the scar entirely.
  • Peeling lasers - This is known as Resurfacing lasers are an excellent method of improving acne scars and chicken pox scars. High-energy lasers are used to remove tissue making the scars more visible. And it will be recovered usually within two weeks. After this treatment the skin may remain pink for several weeks or months. This treatment is used in the treatment of wrinkles and sun-damaged skin.
  • Non-resurfacing lasers - These lasers are very useful for reducing scar redness. They can smooth the raised scars and can also improve itching and burning sensations. Acne scars can be recovered with this type of therapy without any need for time off work.
  • Fillers - There are a number of filling materials that are particularly helpful with depressed scars. They are injected under scars to lift them up and decrease their appearance. It is also useful in the treatment of wrinkles.

Some specific techniques for ACNE scarring treatment:

  • Subcision - This technique is helpful in depressed ACNE scars. A fine needle is inserted under the scar to lift the scar up.
  • Needling -It can be used in all ACNE scars. Needles are used to break the superficial skin layers, to excite a filling reaction resulting in a gentle appearance.
  • Punch excisions - Deep small ACNE scars can be removed by cutting them out. The technique uses small skewer called punches. Sutures are left in place for one week.
  • Punch grafting - Punch implant is small pieces of normal skin used to replace scarred skin. Small skewers called punches are used to clear away the scars. The area is then filled in with a matching piece of unscarred skin, usually taken from the skin behind the ear. The filling takes five to seven days. Laser resurfacing one month later to achieve the smoothest result can follow a Punch grafting.
